Intro to Flat Water Kayaking

kayakingThis class is designed for paddlers who have little to no experience kayaking on calm water. We will spend 20-30 minutes in the classroom with the rest of the time on the water. All sessions will be lead with experienced and qualified instructors. Each session will include the following instruction:

  • Safety & legal requirements while kayaking
  • Float plan
  • Avoiding potential hazards
  • Life Jackets (PFDs – personal floatation devices)
  • Kayak designs
  • How to use a kayak paddle
  • Recovery techniques if capsized
  • On the water kayaking experience

Saturdays, 9:30-11 a.m. (Please arrive no later than 9:15 a.m. so that class can start on time)

Cost per person, per class:
$30 for residents, $36 for non-residents

LOCATION
Lake Norman Community Sailing Center, 15901 NC-73, located within Blythe Landing Park. The park is on the right if heading west on Hwy 73 (Sam Furr Rd). Follow signs to Lake Norman Community Sailing.
Important Class Information
Who can participate?
  • Ages 12 and up. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by parent/guardian.
  • Participants must be able to swim.
  • Participants must sign a liability waiver before or when they arrive at the Lake Norman Community Sailing Center.  Download the LNCS Waiver & Release
What do I need to bring to class?
Lake Norman Community Sailing will provide all necessary equipment, including life vest. You will need to bring:
  • Wear what is comfortable for your regular workout (tights, shorts, etc.) taking the weather into consideration. Keep in mind you may get wet so wear something that dries quickly. Bring a change of clothes just in case.
Also Recommended:
  • Completed Waiver
  • Comfortable workout clothes that dry quickly (dress for the weather; synthetic instead of cotton)
  • Water Bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat / Sunglasses with a strap to secure hat/glasses
  • Water Shoes; shoes that strap on your feet and can get wet
  • Towel
  • Change of clothes
