On March 12, 2017, Officer Bryan McGahan with the Cornelius Police Department responded to a call of an unconscious male soccer player at Bailey Road Park.  Upon arrival, Officer McGahan found Holly Holsclaw, Kevin Averette, Truett Smith, and Craig Conger performing life saving efforts on James Dunworth, III.  Officer McGahan deployed his Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to assist in resuscitating Mr. Dunworth until MEDIC arrived on scene. Mr Dunworth was revived and transported to the hospital and was eventually released.  The actions of Ms. Holsclaw, Mr. Averette, Mr. Smith, Mr. Conger and Officer McGahan directly resulted in Mr. Dunworth's survival of a heart attack.

On Friday, October 13, 2017, the Cornelius Police Department recognized Ms. Holsclaw, Mr. Averette, Mr. Smith and Mr. Conger with a Civilian Commendation for their heroic actions in assisting Mr. Dunworth until first responders arrived on scene.  Officer McGahan was recognized with the Life Saving Award for demonstrating a high degree of professional excellence and his quick response to saving a resident.

Officer McGahan was also recognized at the 2017 Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce Public Safety Luncheon on October 19th at NorthStone Country Club as the Cornelius Police Department Officer of the Year. Officer McGahan's heroic actions reflect the highest standard of conduct for a law enforcement officer.
