Vessel Safety Checks are no charge and take only about 10 minutes, depending on vessel size. There are no negative consequences if you do not pass and solely serve as an educational opportunity to help you and your vessel be safer on Lake Norman. Vessels that pass will receive a sticker on the spot indicating to other boaters that the vessel passed a Vessel Safety Check this season.
Items checked include:
- Proper display of numbers
- Registration/Documentation
- Personal Flotation Devices
- Fire extinguishers
- Ventilation
- Backfire flame control
- Sound producing devices
- Navigation lights
- State requirements
- Overall vessel condition
All of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard or local Lake Enforcement Officers. Know before you launch and take advantage of this free vessel safety inspection.
