[ARCHIVED] The Risks of Drowsy Driving During the Holidays – Tips from the CPD Traffic Safety Team

Drowsy Driving

During the upcoming holiday season, many will spend countless hours driving to visit friends and family, which increases the risk of drowsy driving. It is estimated that more than a third of drivers report having fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The AAA Foundation conducted a study that found drowsiness was a factor in one in five fatal crashes and an estimated 328,000 crashes each year involved a drowsy driver. The study found that drivers who have only had five to six hours of sleep increase their risk of being involved in an accident by 1.9 times. If you are traveling this holiday season, include places to stop and rest during your trip and make sure you are completely rested before starting your trip.

The Cornelius Police Department hopes that you and your family have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!
