In December 2013, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte officials introduced CharMeck Alerts, a new emergency notification system that for the first time will enable officials to share information quickly throughout the county, including the Town of Cornelius and other towns.
Publicly available primary residential and business phones in Cornelius are already included in the system. However, residents are encouraged to explore the new CharMeck Alerts Notification System website to be sure the town has the most up-to-date contact information by visiting CharMeck Alerts and clicking on the link that says "Register for CharMeck Alerts." Users can manage their message preferences by indicating their preferred mode of contact, language and message topics. Those without Internet access, an email address, or who need assistance are encouraged to call (704)892-1363 ext 253 or Mecklenburg County 311. Residents should add (704)432-4641 to their approved number list to ensure they receive important notifications from the town.
CharMeck Alerts Cornelius will replace the current Blackboard Connect system that is utilized for quickly distributing timely, relevant messages to the community. CharMeck Alerts lets residents and business owners sign up for alerts throughout Mecklenburg County - where they live, where they work, and even where relatives live. The system gives users control over the types of alerts and how they receive them. Messages can be sent via text message, telephone message or email, according to users' preferences. Cornelius plans to use the system for emergency and non-emergency notifications such as special events, crime, fire, traffic and solid waste/recycling alerts.
Everbridge Inc. is hosting the CharMeck Alerts Notification System. It's the same one used in emergencies including Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy, during the Boston Marathon bombings, and the school shooting at Sandy Hook, CT. It's used by governments from Connecticut to Boston to New Orleans to Beverly Hills, CA.
