Intro to Flat Water Kayaking

Overview

This class is designed for paddlers who have little to no experience kayaking on calm water. We will spend 20-30 minutes in the classroom with the rest of the time on the water. All sessions will be lead with experienced and qualified instructors.

Lessons include

  • Safety & legal requirements while kayaking
  • Float plan
  • Avoiding potential hazards
  • Life Jackets (PFDs – personal floatation devices)
  • Kayak designs
  • How to use a kayak paddle
  • Recovery techniques if capsized
  • On the water kayaking experience

Cost: Per lesson, the Resident Fee is $30 and Non-Resident Fee is $36

Location: Lake Norman Community Sailing Center, 15901 NC-73, located within Blythe Landing Park. The park is on the right if heading west on Hwy 73.  Follow signs to Lake Norman Community Sailing.

Participant Requirements

  • Ages 12 and up. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by parent/guardian.
  • Participants must be able to swim.
  • Participants must sign a liability waiver before or when they arrive at the Lake Norman Community Sailing Center.  Download the LNCS Waiver & Release

Participants will need the following for class:

Lake Norman Community Sailing will provide all necessary equipment, including life vest. You will need to bring:

  • Swimsuit or comfortable workout clothes that dry quickly (cropped tights, shorts, etc.). Dress for the weather (synthetic instead of cotton). Keep in mind to wear something that dries quickly in case you get wet.  
  • Water shoes (shoes that strap on your feet and can get wet). Participants can also go barefoot on the board but will need shoes to walk out to the dock.
  • Towel

Recommended:

  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat/sunglasses with a strap to secure hat/glasses
  • Change of clothes
