Loose leaf pick up will begin November 2007 and will continue to the last week of February 2008. Please make sure that there are no small branches mixed in with the leaves. Also make sure that the leaves are not blocking or in the path of storm drains, storm drain ditches or sidewalks. If you have any questions concerning this service please contact us by email or phone.
You may also bag your leaves in 25 gallon clear plastic bags for Waste Management to pick up on your regular trash service day.
The Public Works Department has ten full time employees and is headed up by Ricky Overcash. Ricky has been with the Department since 1991 and has become an essential part of our Town.
The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of streets including the annual paving contracts, right-of-way mowing, street lights and traffic signs. The Town also contracts its garbage collection and recycling services to a private contractor, Waste Management. There are also many services that are "traditionally" handled by cities or towns are instead handled by other local government agencies. Water and sewer issues within the Town, for example, are usually addressed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department. Storm water issues are a function of Mecklenburg County Storm Water Services. There is a similar arrangement with regard to electricity. The Town’s electricity is divided into three power companies ElectriCities, Duke Power and Energy United.

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE COLLECTION
Holidays Observed
Thanksgiving Not operating Thanksgiving Day; will operate a day behind on Friday and Saturday
Christmas Not operating Christmas Day; will operate a day behind for rest of week
New Year’s Operating on a normal schedule; not off anytime.
Household garbage collection is handled by Waste Management and will be picked up once a week. All garbage must be placed in roll-out containers and placed curbside by 6:30 a.m. on your collection day. Waste Management utilizes fully automated curbside waste collection, so please follow the guidelines outlined below when curbing your roll-out:
· Curb your roll-out container the night before your collection day. Please leave space between carts of 3 feet.
· Place your roll-out within 4 feet of the road. Do not place the roll-out next to your mailbox.
· Make sure it is clear of trees and overhanging limbs.
· Make sure the wheels of your roll-out are away from the road (the lid hinge should be placed away from the road).
A resident may add a second collection cart for $70 plus a $7.52 monthly rate. This is the same negotiated rate that the Town is charged by Waste Management, and it is substantially cheaper than what the market rate is. Residents will have to set this up on their own by contacting Waste Management's Customer Service # 1-800-927-8362.
Waste Management is not responsible for missed pick-ups if the container is not curbside. Roll-out containers are the property of Waste Management and the Town of Cornelius and must not be removed from the premises.
YARD WASTE COLLECTION POLICY
Please review the following guidelines to ensure compliance with the Collection Policy:
· Yard waste consists of excess leaves, grass, shrub limbs, and tree limbs less than 4 inches in diameter and 5 feet in length, and other organic material removed in general maintenance of property by the homeowner.
· Yard waste does not consist of construction debris, demolition debris, dirt, rock, brick, block, sod, water, pavement, or any other material that could be defined as household waste or is not compost material.
· Service level is based on a per house basis. Yard waste must be placed on the curb by 6:30 a.m. of the specified pick-up day. Do not place yard debris on the sidewalk. Yard waste should only be placed on the curb of the house that generated the yard waste.
· Waste generated by private landscaping contractors will not be collected.
· Yard waste will be collected same day as solid waste and recycling.
· Yard waste service consists of one time a week pick up of yard waste from the curb.
In order for yard waste to be collected it must be prepared as follows:
· Grass clippings must be placed in clear plastic bags no larger than 25 gallons in size.
· In addition to the yard waste that is bagged, manageable piles of limbs or brush will be collected. The overall dimension of the pile should be no larger than 6 inches in diameter, 5 feet in length, 4 feet in width, and 4 feet tall.
· During heavy leaf generating months (November 1 – January 15) the contracting crew will make every effort to collect bags of leaves up to a maximum of 20. Bags must be clear plastic and no larger than 25 gallon.
· Under no circumstances will the contractor spend more than 10 minutes collecting yard waste from one house.
· During the holidays, the contractor will collect Christmas trees, garlands, and wreaths. These items must be stripped of all wires, lights, ornaments, or any other inorganic materials and placed at the curb. No flocked trees.
Yard waste that does not meet the above criteria will be tagged. If the resident makes the pile conform, it will be collected in accordance with service level stated above.
If a resident wishes a yard waste container call Waste Management at 800-927-8362. The yard waste container is 96 gallons in size and brown in color to easily identify that it is yard waste. Plastic bags will not be allowed in the yard waste cart. Only organic materials may be put in the cart. The cost of the container is $70 payable to Waste Management via a credit card before delivery will be made.
RECYCLING COLLECTION
Recycling collection is handled by Waste Management and will be collected once a week. Recycling must be curbside by 6:30 a.m. on your collection day. Waste Management is not responsible for missed pick-ups if recycling is not curbside. Recycling is collected same day as garbage and yard waste.
Items that can be recycled include:
· Metal Cans (aluminum or steel): These include soft drink, beer & food cans. Rinse out cans.
· #1 & #2 Plastic Containers: These include soft drink, liquor bottles, milk jugs and detergent bottles.

BULK ITEM COLLECTION

Bulky Item waste includes large items such as furniture, household appliances, electronics, and new-move bulk cardboard. the town will continue to provide solid waste, recycling and yard waste services. The Town sincerely regrets not being able to provide Bulky Item pick-up, but feels this is a prudent step to maintain other Town services at a cost-effective rate.
