The Town of Cornelius is managed by the Administration Department consisting of the Mayor, Board of Commissioners, Town Manager, Assistant Town Manager, Project Manager,and Town Clerk.

The Mayor and Board of Commissioners are elected for two-year staggered terms during odd-numbered years. They are responsible for policy and service development for the citizens of Cornelius.

The Town of Cornelius currently operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The Board of Commissioners establishes policies which are then carried out by the Town Manager and supporting staff members.
