Project Overview:
The Town of Cornelius in conjunction with the developer from the Antiquity project are going to begin the much anticipated extension of Catawba Ave over the railroad tracks into the subdivision. This project will add turn lanes, sidewalks, new mast arms signals, pedestrian crosswalks, decorative street lights, and rail crossing arms. The new roadway will go across the tracks into the subdivision and connect to the infrastructure that is already in place linking Cornelius to Davidson via the wooden bridge and South Street. The project officially began the week of September 28th and is anticipated to be completed before the end of this calendar year and open by the end of April 2010. This will allow time for NCDOT and Norfolk Southern to coordinate the new signal with the new rail crossing arms.
As of now the contractor will not be able to close any portion of the road between 6:00 am and 9:00 am and again between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. They will be working mainly during the day, however some night shifts will be required during construction, most work will require small one lane closures and the associated flag men. Traffic during normal construction will be slowed but at least one travel lane in each direction will remain open unless a special operation must occur. The detour routes that are posted around Hickory, Oak, and Mulberry street are in place in case of a major problem, or if the contractor hits a utility in the roadway which will require the traffic to be detoured.
